In this session, Sara Ulius-Sabel (Sr. Staff UX Researcher at ServiceNow) explores how Lean Thinking — a systematic approach originating from Toyota’s manufacturing practices — can transform how we approach UX research operations.

Research teams are under increasing pressure to deliver more value with constrained resources. But what if the real problem isn’t doing more with less, but rather eliminating what doesn’t add value in the first place? Sara will share how Lean Thinking helped her identify and eliminate waste throughout her career, from UX design and user research at Whirlpool to UX research at ServiceNow.

We’ll explore the seven types of waste in research operations (waiting, defects, over-processing, inventory, motion, overproduction, and transportation) and how to systematically identify and eliminate them. We’ll also discuss a timely new dimension: How does AI fit into Lean Thinking? As AI becomes both a producer of research artifacts and a consumer of our inputs, how can we use this shift as a catalyst to fundamentally rethink value and waste?

Attendees will gain:

  • A framework for identifying the seven types of waste in their research operations
  • Practical strategies to minimize waste and maximize value for stakeholders
  • Understanding of how to apply Lean principles to AI integration in research
  • Actionable steps to audit and improve their research workflows

This session is ideal for UX researchers, research ops professionals, and research leaders seeking to operate more efficiently and deliver greater impact.

Dropbox has built a democratization program that makes research accessible to everyone in the company. With leadership buy-in from the start and a dedicated program owner, Allison Cole, the initiative empowers PMs, designers, and other non-researchers to run their own research without compromising quality.

In this session, Allison will share Dropbox’s journey:

How leadership made democratization a priority and structured the team to support it.

The tactics that make the program successful, from office hours and coffee chats to a democratization playbook.

The cultural practices that keep research visible and integrated across Dropbox.

How tools like Great Question support this work, making it easier to recruit participants, run interviews, and share insights.

You’ll leave with practical examples of how to set up your own democratization efforts, enable non-researchers with confidence, and strike the right balance between rigor and accessibility.

AI is no longer an experiment, it’s shaping the core of how the world is designed, built, and experienced. But in a world where AI can be faster, more consistent, and even more personalized than humans, how do you decide when to lead with AI and when to prioritize human touch?

Join Noam Segal, trained as a psychologist, seasoned research leader, and coach to tech professionals, for a practical conversation that helps teams answer this question. Drawing on behavioral science, real-world examples, and his bold predictions about the future of human experience, Noam will unpack:

  • The decision framework for determining when research should be AI-first vs. human-first.
  • Signals from user research that reveal “human non-negotiables”, or the aspects of experience people will fight to keep human.
  • How to break default patterns in AI adoption. Why most teams are making AI integration decisions on autopilot, and how to uncover bold opportunities
  • Lessons from leading high-impact research teams for creating a culture that challenges assumptions, integrates AI intelligently, and aligns cross-functionally

You’ll walk away with tools and examples you can apply immediately to your own product, design and research decisions so you can move faster, with more confidence, in building experiences that drive adoption, loyalty, and business impact.

March 12, 2025 @ 2:00 pm 3:00 pm EDT

In this session, join Ned Dwyer and Pedro Vargas as they explore the importance of measuring research effort and impact through the Researcher Effort Score. Pedro’s development of the Researcher Effort Score—a metric similar to the Customer Effort Score—quantifies how easy or difficult it is to conduct research within an organization. This transforms the way companies demonstrate the impact of research, proving that it extends far beyond administrative work. With research teams under increasing pressure to do more with less, measuring impact has never been more important. This session will explore:
  • How the Researcher Effort Score works and why it matters.
  • Tactical ways to measure and communicate the impact of research and ResearchOps
  • How Great Question supports research teams in tracking and improving their researcher effort score.
This session is perfect for ResearchOps professionals, senior researchers, and organizational leaders aiming to streamline research processes and demonstrate the value of research and research ops.

Every research team struggles with the same challenge: how to communicate insights in a way that actually changes minds and drives action.

In this session, Jesse Livingston, ServiceNow’s first dedicated research communications manager, will share his playbook for making research resonate. Jesse will explore how storytelling, structure, and strategic timing can elevate research from informative to unforgettable.

He’ll walk through his 4-part framework: Distilled, Dramatic, Targeted, and Timely, using real-world examples and communication tactics. He’ll also share how to use AI to simplify and rephrase research language into plain, concise terms, helping you improve how you share insights across your org.

Whether you’re a UX researcher, research operations leader, or design/product team member working with customer insights, this session will give you the tools to scale research communication, make findings more accessible, and ensure your work actually drives decisions.

It’s been 8 years since the original 8 Pillars of User Research helped shape the foundation of ResearchOps. Now, with the rise of AI, evolving team structures, and the growing pressure to democratize research, the field is shifting rapidly — and so are the people and environments that shape it.

In the kickoff of our 5-part series, 8 Pillars, 8 Years Later, join ReOps OGs and community leaders Emma Boulton and Holly Cole as we explore how the “People” and “Environment” pillars have evolved:

  • How have the roles, responsibilities, and career paths of research practitioners evolved?
  • How are research environments evolving in response to AI?
  • Can ResearchOps practitioners stay ahead while avoiding burnout?
  • And how do we make space for both structure and experimentation in modern research orgs?

This conversation is all about people, purpose, and possibility.

Featuring

  • Emma Boulton, Design & UX Leader, and the founding voice of the original 8 Pillars
  • Holly Cole, Executive Director of the ResearchOps Community

Collecting lots of learnings and insights doesn’t necessarily add up to making an impact.

This is something that Jake Burghardt, author of “Stop Wasting Research”, has seen firsthand throughout his 20+ years in the field.

Thankfully, he’s got some great tips to help make “unaddressed” research more useful for product development, and keep “top insights” alive in decision making cycles!

Don’t miss this chance to learn how to turn overlooked research into real value!
