[URL of this listing: https://usercalendar.com/event/lean-thinking-in-ux-research-maximizing-value-minimizing-waste/]

In this session, Sara Ulius-Sabel (Sr. Staff UX Researcher at ServiceNow) explores how Lean Thinking — a systematic approach originating from Toyota’s manufacturing practices — can transform how we approach UX research operations.

Research teams are under increasing pressure to deliver more value with constrained resources. But what if the real problem isn’t doing more with less, but rather eliminating what doesn’t add value in the first place? Sara will share how Lean Thinking helped her identify and eliminate waste throughout her career, from UX design and user research at Whirlpool to UX research at ServiceNow.

We’ll explore the seven types of waste in research operations (waiting, defects, over-processing, inventory, motion, overproduction, and transportation) and how to systematically identify and eliminate them. We’ll also discuss a timely new dimension: How does AI fit into Lean Thinking? As AI becomes both a producer of research artifacts and a consumer of our inputs, how can we use this shift as a catalyst to fundamentally rethink value and waste?

Attendees will gain:

  • A framework for identifying the seven types of waste in their research operations
  • Practical strategies to minimize waste and maximize value for stakeholders
  • Understanding of how to apply Lean principles to AI integration in research
  • Actionable steps to audit and improve their research workflows

This session is ideal for UX researchers, research ops professionals, and research leaders seeking to operate more efficiently and deliver greater impact.

March 12, 2025 @ 2:00 pm 3:00 pm EDT

In this session, join Ned Dwyer and Pedro Vargas as they explore the importance of measuring research effort and impact through the Researcher Effort Score. Pedro’s development of the Researcher Effort Score—a metric similar to the Customer Effort Score—quantifies how easy or difficult it is to conduct research within an organization. This transforms the way companies demonstrate the impact of research, proving that it extends far beyond administrative work. With research teams under increasing pressure to do more with less, measuring impact has never been more important. This session will explore:
  • How the Researcher Effort Score works and why it matters.
  • Tactical ways to measure and communicate the impact of research and ResearchOps
  • How Great Question supports research teams in tracking and improving their researcher effort score.
This session is perfect for ResearchOps professionals, senior researchers, and organizational leaders aiming to streamline research processes and demonstrate the value of research and research ops.

Growth is the lifeline of any tech product. When user engagement drops and new sign-ups slow down, investors lose confidence, and your company’s future becomes uncertain. The worst part? Many product teams don’t see it coming.

To stay ahead, you need to recognize the early warning signs of stagnation and know how to pivot before it’s too late.

That’s why I’m sitting down with Shannon Vettes, CEO of Usersnap and a veteran product leader with over 20 years of experience.

Agenda

1. The product decisions that silently kill growth
2. Early indicators that your product is losing traction
3. Actionable tactics & using feedback to revive a struggling product
4. Live Q&A with Shannon

Key learnings

Shannon will break down real-world, practical examples of how product choices—big and small—can make or break growth. You’ll walk away with easy-to-try strategies to safeguard your product’s momentum and set it up for long-term success.

About Shannon

Shannon is a seasoned product leader with a career spanning over 20 years at companies like BlaBlaCar or Acquia. She is also an active mentor & lecturer at Product School or Women in Product. As the CEO of Usersnap, she helps digital products turn customer feedback into powerful insights.

AI tools are proliferating, with some promising to do all the synthesis of interviews in seconds and others offering insights from synthetic participants. The hard truth is that AI will increasingly permeate our workflows.

What you can control, however, is where in the UX research process you use AI wisely—and understand the level of trustworthiness you can expect from its results.

To help clarify the hype around AI and highlight where to approach it with caution, I’ll sit down with Caitlin Sullivan. Caitlin, who has over 10 years of UX research experience, runs a newsletter tracking the latest developments in AI for UX research and has meticulously tested over 110 AI solutions.

Agenda

1. Where to use – and not use – AI in the UX research process
2. How to identify limitations and assess the trustworthiness of AI solutions
3. Skills needed to maximize the benefits of AI
4. Q&A

Key learnings

Caitlin will help you gain confidence in using AI by understanding the best deployment opportunities, the limitations, and how to enhance your skills for integrating AI into your work.

About Caitlin

Caitlin is a UX research expert with over a decade of experience working with companies like ManyPats and Soundtrack Your Brand. She has founded two businesses, one of which she sold in 2023. She is one of the few AI-literate professionals in the UX field.

Agenda

1. Signs of churn – Proxies showing you will soon lose a customer
2. When and how to research churning customers
3. One-off vs continuous churn research
4. Q&A

Key learnings

Erica will share her techniques and experiences on how to gather insights from churning customers, leaving you with a process blueprint that you can easily follow.

About Erica

Erica is the co-founder of Before You Code, a consultancy helping companies build products that delight customers. With a PhD in medical anthropology, Erica worked in academia for years before becoming a UX leader at companies like Telenor or SumUp.
